Tulum Ruins

The greatest attraction of this renowned archeological site is its unique location. Standing on a bluff facing the rising sun looking out on the Caribbean Sea, the view is nothing less than spectacular. In Maya, Tulum means "Wall", and the city was christened thus because it is one of the very few walled cities the ancients ever built. The main temple, and many of the 60 smaller structures, display murals and friezes of deities, priests, rituals and everyday activities. Be sure to stop at the bazaar outside the archeological site selling Mayan calendars, t-shirts, hammocks, onyx carvings, and other souvenirs.
